Ductile Iron Pipes & Fittings
Derwent Industries has a wide range of ductile iron pipes & fittings available, all of which are supplied with either Rilsan/Nylon 11 or FBE coating. Rilsan and FBE make it unnecessary to wrap the fittings (unless otherwise directed by asset owner) and less susceptible to corrosion.
Our product range includes bends, tees, crosses, caps, connectors, tapers, hydrant risers, and other essential fittings suitable for a wide variety of water and infrastructure applications.
What Does “Ductile” Actually Mean?
In metallurgy, ductility is the physical property of a material that allows it to undergo significant plastic deformation before it actually breaks. In simpler terms, it is the ability of a metal to stretch, bend, or deform under tensile stress without cracking or snapping.
While standard “Grey Cast Iron” is brittle (like a ceramic plate that shatters if dropped), Ductile Iron is designed to behave more like steel. It possesses the unique ability to “give” under pressure.
Why Ductility Matters for Pipes & Fittings
For an asset owner or engineer, the scientific property of ductility translates into three critical real-world benefits:
Impact Resistance: If a pipe is dropped during installation or struck by heavy machinery, ductile iron absorbs the energy by deforming slightly rather than fracturing.
Internal Pressure Surges: Water hammers and pressure spikes can cause brittle pipes to burst. Ductile iron expands slightly to accommodate the stress.
Ground Movement: In areas with expansive soils or seismic activity, ductile iron pipes can deflect and “bend with the earth,” maintaining the integrity of the line where other materials would fail.
The Result: By combining the natural strength and longevity of iron with the flexibility of steel, Ductile Iron provides a “fail-safe” piping solution. When paired with high-performance coatings like Rilsan/Nylon 11 or FBE, the result is a pipe that is both structurally resilient and chemically protected against corrosion.
