Flow Control Technical Charts

Find pipe sizing charts, flange dimension tables, and bolt & stud specifications for Australian and American piping standards in one place. This page covers pipe sizing to AS1074 and ANSI B36.10, flange dimensions to AS2129, AS4087, ISO 7005 and ANSI B16.1/B16.5, plus bolt sizing and temperature/pressure ratings for flanged joints. Use the tabs below to quickly locate the exact chart, table, or standard you need — from pipe mass and bundling data through to ANSI flange pressure ratings.

Compare nominal and outside diameters across pressure and non-pressure pipe materials — including ductile iron (DICL), steel, uPVC, GRP, cast iron and reinforced concrete — against their governing Australian Standard. Use these pipe sizing charts to match nominal diameter (DN) to actual outside diameter when specifying or cross-checking pipe to AS2280, AS1477, AS1074, AS4130 and related standards.

Note: These charts should only be used as a guide. Figures are rounded to the closest decimal place - Use actual pipe measurements for accuracy
Handy tip: To get accurate average diameter divide circumference by 3.142 (pi) Eg. If circumference is 383mm then diameter = 121.9mm
Caution: Steel and reinforced concrete have many intermediate sizes that have not been included here.

Formula to attain approximate mass in kilograms per metre (kg/m) for Steel Round Pipe and Tubing

m = (D – t) t x 0.02466
Where:
m= mass to the nearest 0.01 kg/m
D =  Outside Diameter in millimetres
(To nearest 0.1 mm for OD up to 406.4mm)
(To nearest 1.0mm for OD 457 mm and above)
t   = Wall thickness to nearest 0.01 mm
Example
Nominal Size       Step 1. 323.9 – 9.53 = 314.37
DN300 NPS12     Step 2. 314.37 x 9.53 =2995.9461
OD = 323.9 mm   Step 3. 2995.9461 x 0.024.66
W.T. – 9.53 mm     = 73.88 kg/m

A pound-to-kilogram conversion table for quickly converting given mass values from 1 to 1500, using the standard factor of 1 lb = 0.4536 kg. Useful for converting pipe, flange and fitting weights between imperial and metric units without recalculating manually.

The mass of an object is the quanitiy of matter it contains and is constant irrespective of the location or altitude. The weight of that object is the force exerted on it by gravity and thus varies from place to
place and according to height above sea level or the distance from the Earth’s centre.

  • A. To Use, locate “given mass” in the “given mass” column – whether lbs. or kg.
  • B. If the “given mass’ is in pounds (lbs0, read kilograms (kg) in the right hand column. eg. Given mass 70lbs = 31.75kg
Conversion Factors:-
1 pound (lb) x 0.4536 = kilograms (kg)
1 kilogram (kg) x 2.2046 = pound (lbs)

Look up Celsius-to-Fahrenheit conversions across the full working range, from -196°C (-320°F) up to 1316°C (2400°F). Find your known value in the “Given Mass” column, then read the converted figure on either side — a fast way to cross-check flange, pipe or material temperature limits when specifications are given in a different unit than your own.

Conversion Factors

Degrees – Celsius to Fahrenheit

(°C × 9⁄5) + 32 = °F

Degrees – Fahrenheit to Celsius

(°F x -32)  + 5⁄9 = °C

How to use the Conversion Chart
  • (A) Locate “Given Temperature” in the “Given Temperature” Column whether ºC or ºF.
  • (B) If “given temperature” is in degrees Celsius (ºC) read degrees Fahrenheit (ºF)
    in right hand column.
  • (C) If “given temperature” is in degrees Fahrenheit (ºF) read degrees Celsius (ºC)
    in left hand column.
  • (D) Example: a. Given temperature is 35ºC= 95ºF from right hand column
    b. Given temperature is 35ºF= 1.7ºC from left hand column

FAQ

AS2129 is the older Australian flange standard, still in use for Table D, E, F and H flanges. AS4087 is the updated standard covering the same drilling patterns but using PN (nominal pressure) ratings — PN16, PN21 and PN35 — instead of the older table letters. Table D and PN16, Table F and PN21, and Table H and PN35 share the same drilling and are generally interchangeable.

Derwent’s pipe sizing charts cover pressure and non-pressure pipe across Australian standards including AS1074 (steel), AS1477 (uPVC), AS1711/AS1712 (asbestos cement), AS1163 (structural steel hollow sections), AS4058 (reinforced concrete), and AS4130 (polyethylene), as well as ANSI B36.10 for American steel pipe sizing.

NSI B16.5 (also referenced as BS1560) is the American standard for steel pipe flanges and fittings from NPS ½” to 24”. It defines flange dimensions and bolting for pressure classes 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500 and 2500, along with corresponding temperature/pressure ratings for carbon steel flanges.

Bolt size depends on the flange’s nominal size and pressure class. Derwent’s bolt & stud dimension chart lists the number of bolts, bolt diameter, and stud or machine bolt length for ANSI B16.5 (BS1560) flanges from 15mm to 900mm, across Class 150 through Class 2500.

For carbon steel flanges to ANSI B16.5, a Class 150 (PN20) flange is rated to approximately 1960 kPa at ambient temperature (-29°C to 38°C), dropping as operating temperature increases — down to around 130 kPa at 540°C. Exact ratings vary by flange class and temperature; see Derwent’s full temperature/pressure rating table for all classes.

AS2129 Table E drilling is not formally adopted into AS4087, but it shares the same pressure rating as PN14 and uses the same drilling pattern as AS4087 PN14/PN16 in most sizes up to 600NB — with exceptions at 100NB, 250NB and 450NB.

Approximate mass in kg/m is calculated using the formula m = (D − t) × t × 0.02466, where D is the outside diameter in mm and t is the wall thickness in mm. Derwent’s ANSI B36.10 pipe chart includes a worked example for this calculation.

For general industrial, commercial, and water/wastewater applications, AS2129 table flanging remains the most widely used in Australia. ANSI flanging to ANSI B16.5 is now the more common choice in oil, gas, and mining applications. European PN-rated flanges to AS4331 or EN 1092-1 are also increasingly specified.
